Is UpCity worth the cost?

We have been developing websites for small and large corporations since 1995. Our services travel by word-of-mouth from client to potential client.

We get many emails and calls a week from leads who heard about our great services and want to hire us. Because we like to give as much personal attention to our clients as possible, we sometimes refer potential customers to fellow agencies.

During our 25+ years in web development, we had never heard of UpCity until quarantine 2020 when we were doing SEO for Clutch and found they were listed as a similar website. So we checked them out.

We discover something interesting about UpCity

What is UpCity?

On the surface they appear to be a directory of top performing agencies. We initiated an application process and were quickly accepted into the directory where they displayed our full information but immediately afterwards we began receiving calls and emails to, "upgrade" our listing. At that point we discovered the directory inclusion was not actually based on merit but on money.

$1,200-$1,800 a year for a listing?

Well, that's a pretty shiny penny.

We discussed the upgrade as an agency and decided that was not the type of method we wanted to pursue. We politely declined upgrading and UpCity completely removed our listing.

Before we declined their upgrade -

After we declined their upgrade -

Hmm! Interesting...

So if we don't pay, we don't get a listing at all. So all of those B2B we saw listed on UpCity? They're paying a minimum of $150. a month to be listed there. (there were higher tiers that allowed businesses to be more visible).

Ultimately ask yourself is the cost worth it to you?

But... I don't recommend it.

As for TNW Creations, when you see us mentioned on a top web developer's list or a best SEO agency in Texas - you can bet it's because we earned it by merit. We didn't pay for the title.

I highly recommend working your way up the old-fashioned way. Hard work and real recognition is nothing you can buy and it makes you feel so good about yourself when you look back and see how far you've come and you earned every step!

Vanity award  - vanity awards are pay to play, purchased titles or awards that are not earned based on merit, talent or skill.

TNW Creations is a Web Development & Media Publishing Agency in Austin, Texas. Web Development, cyber security, web design, clean energy web host, Advanced SEO, Digital Marketing and more since 1995.

I've been programming, designing, writing and publishing professionally online since 1995. I've worn many hats throughout my life, but the common core of my career has always been media. Besides the portfolio you see on TNW Creations, my internet presence has been substantial for over 2 decades. In 1995, while still in college, I founded TNW Creations and became part of the grassroots development for teaching the Lakhota language online. By 2004, my bilingual work was listed on many sites, including National Geographic , Encarta and Touchstone Pictures Hidalgo. When I'm not developing and writing, you'll find me managing MagicStoryLand.Com, creating kid-friendly game & video content, investigating and initating hostile website takedowns, posting salty articles about cyber threats, moderating UnifyLife.Org and enjoying my  community, church & family.
